A lot has been said recently about ‘The Best Job in the World’, a job offer to live on Hamilton Island in Australia and get paid a large amount of money. Well, that’s not too bad, but there is rather a lot of competition for it. This blog is about an alternative Best Job,, the one I just got.
I’ve been a professional Scuba Dive Instructor for the last ten years. I’ve been lucky enough to work in some amazing places:- four years in Roatan, Honduras – Four years in The Commonwealth of Dominica (both places in the Caribbean) – and Two years in Tioman, a small island of the East Coast of Malaysia. I have kept a record of the last six years on my website LiquidGuru, which contains 1000s of photos and 100s of videos.
Barb, my partner (also a professional Scuba Dive Instructor), and I recently finished our contract in Malaysia and have been living in Singapore, staying with friends, for the last two months, looking looking looking for a new job with new challenges somewhere in the world. We are both kind of fed up with day-to-day teaching and divemastering, as between us we’ve completed nearly 10,000 dives and certified close to 1500 students. So what we could find? Especially in this climate of financial uncertainty…..
At the beginning of January we saw an ad for a couple to work as the ‘Expedition Chroniclers’ for an Adventure Cruise yacht in Fiji. They wanted Dive Instructor with a passion for the underwater world, video and photography skills and a bit more, to work on their 140ft (43m) yacht. We sent off our CVs and waited. After 10 days we suddenly got a reply from them, and it was pretty much a straight job offer…..wow……FIJI!!
I have always wanted to get to the South Pacific. To be stuck in the middle of the world’s largest ocean, living on a luxury yacht, is the stuff of dreams. Yes, it will be hard work for us, but it will be challenging and offer Barb and myself the chance to take a lot more video and photos and do something a little different……
The Best Job in the World? Maybe
I hope to keep this blog up, recording our trip to Fiji and our experiences once there.
